Guest lecture by Lotfi el Hamidi “Wolves and poor wretches”

The Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre Governance of Migration and Diversity (GMD) invites you to the guest lecture “Wolves and poor wretches” by journalist Lotfi el Hamidi[1]. The first two decennia of this century were formed from the ruins of the Twin Towers in New York. After the attacks on New York on 11 September 2001, Lotfi, a Moroccan teenager from Rotterdam, suddenly found himself in one of the hinge points of global history. In his guest lecture, El Hamidi looks back at this period when populism emerged in the Netherlands, hatred for migrants increased, and radical Islam acquired a foothold in Dutch society. How 9/11 shaped a generation and how a migration narrative got entrenched in world history. After the guest lecture, there will be a discussion with guest speaker Prof. dr. Han Entzinger and GMD-student Aysu Arslaner as discussants.

[1] Lotfi El Hamidi (1986) studied history at Erasmus University Rotterdam and works as journalist at the national newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

2023 Han Entzinger Award Ceremony

The 2023 Han Entzinger Award Ceremony will precede the guest lecture by Lotfi el Hamidi. The Han Entzinger Award is a yearly prize awarded to an excellent Masters’ thesis on migration-related diversities written by a student at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

The winner of the 2023 award is Jill Stigter (International Master’s in Advanced Research in Criminology), who wrote her thesis on the topic of lived experiences from people-on-the-move with harm resulting from migration control practices in Greece and the EU, under the supervision of Richard Staring (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Gert Vermeulen and Olga Petintseva (Ghent University).

The winner of the 2022 award. Anouk Jorna (graduated from the Governance of Migration and Diversity program - Public Administration track), will also receive the award during the ceremony. In her research, Anouk looked at the issue of liminal legality among Latin American immigrants in Florida, and how this affected their migration aspirations in the future.
