It's OFFICIAL: Four migration professors receive double appointments within LDE Alliance

Peter and MarlouFour professors specialized in migration received double appointments as Leiden-Delft-Erasmus professors on the 26th of October 2022. Prof.dr.ir. Thea Hilhorst and Prof. Dr. Peter Scholten (both Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Prof. Dr. Marlou Schrover and Prof. Dr. Olaf van Vliet (both Leiden University) have each been given a second appointment at a different university within the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus alliance. All are affiliated with the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Center Governance of Migration and Diversity.

In the LDE Center Governance of Migration and Diversity, researchers from all three LDE Universities collaborate on research into the governance aspects of migration and diversity, from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The four professors were officially 'double appointed' during the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus lustrum event on the 26th of October at the Woudestein campus in Rotterdam, attended by Scholten and Schrover.

 

MarlouThe connection between Leiden, The Hague, and Rotterdam

For example, Marlou Schrover is involved in the center from the Institute of History, Faculty of Humanities in Leiden. She is now appointed at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

OlafEconomist Olaf van Vliet, who works at both the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Law and the Institute of Public Administration of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University, is also appointed to the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

theaSpinoza Prize winner Thea Hilhorst contributes her knowledge of development cooperation from the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and is now also appointed to the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University.

PeterFinally, Peter Scholten leads the center from the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and is appointed to the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University.

 

 

Network of researchers, postdocs, and students

Scholten says about the origin of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Center Governance of Migration and Diversity: 'We started in 2019 because we saw the need for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. In recent years, the center has housed an impressive eight professors in history, urban studies, public administration, economics, humanitarian studies, and media in all three universities. '

'We are proud of the robust network of affiliated researchers, young postdocs and students within our Governance of Migration and Diversity Master program - where the center comes from. We see these double appointments as the next step in our growth.”

Migration in the past and future

Prof. dr. Dr. Wim van den Doel, Dean of Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities, about the social importance and unique approach of this center: 'Migration and diversity are very topical themes and pre-eminently subjects that should be considered in conjunction with different disciplines. Current events also require a contemplative view. What do we learn from earlier times?'

What will be important migration flows in the future is best analyzed in a team."
