GMD Writing Fellowship 2026 Reflection

From Master's Thesis to Publication and Academic Goals Ahead

Reflecting on the Collaboration with GMD

My time as a GMD fellow has come to an end, and I’m now able to look back on my experience and reflect on the developments it has brought.

Thanks to the Fellowship, I had the opportunity to rethink and improve my thesis, making it more authentic to the researcher I aim to be. This process was made considerably easier thanks to the support of my former supervisor and now co-author, Dr Asya Pisarevskaya. The article is still being revised, as we agreed to balance the editing of this paper with my current PhD without added pressure, and I am extremely satisfied with my time during the Fellowship. Reworking the theoretical framework with Dr Asya Pisarevskaya resulted in a clearer theoretical contribution, which allows for a smoother continuation into the remaining sections.

Looking Ahead

Despite the Fellowship formally ending and the article still being revised, external reception has already been very positive. For instance, the paper’s abstract was accepted for a panel on “Youth with Migration Backgrounds and Political Engagement” at the ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research) September conference in Kraków. Receiving the news was great, and this outcome provides an opportunity to share the research with a wider audience. Before then, I will be presenting the preliminary article to the European University Institute’s “Migration Working Group”, which will provide a smaller-scale, familiar platform for me to receive feedback from experts and postgraduates in my field.

Overall, the year ahead promises to be an exciting one. I will be forever grateful to the GMD Fellowship for providing the initial impetus to transform my thesis into a publication, and for equipping me with the confidence and support necessary to pursue that goal.
